Doom-Mongering
Brooklyn trio GHXST have been impressing us here at R13 over the last few years with both their earlier recordings and regular live shows in the UK. Now we see the release of their latest EP Nowhere and are we still impressed? There’s no doubt about it. If you are looking for some upbeat joyful music, this is not the place for you. Nowhere is full of long, deep, dark, heavy riffs full of thoughts of doom. This feels like it is music for music fans.
Despite only being a three piece, the trio create a large scale sound with no hints of being over produced, listening to this EP sounds like the band are right there inside your head playing an intimate gig just for you. Chris Wild’s guitar skills are good enough to lead each track. However, when you throw in Shelly Ex’s haunting vocals and guitars, Nathan La Guerra’s drums you get the perfect combination.
The riffs of Slow Down and title track Nowhere kick things of by pounding you throughout until you submit and nod your head to the rhythm. In Death travels at a slightly more aggressive pace without losing the grungy, sludgy, doomy feel the whole ethos of the EP creates.
Nowhere is another big step in GHXST’s evolution. No doubt Charles Darwin would have been proud.
