Chirpy and sweet
Rufus Wainwright always comes across as easygoing, honest, which are the central qualities for 'Crumb By Crumb' which is the archetypal summer record. Fruity vocals, bumbling bass and twinkling background piano remind you of a perfect picnic by the riverside; it couldn't sound more delicious (and that's even before the mention of crumbs!) Wainwright hums along to the swinging tune in a way that makes the record sound so natural and welcoming; far removed from the overproduced pop/rock of the moment that's cramming the radiowaves. Although Wainwright is preparing to support Keane, this track is about as far from their emo-cries as you can get.
Jaunty and yes, ever so slightly camp, fans of Rufus will love it, personally I'd prefer a little less of this sticky summery stuff, but it's a great record. The word chirpy was invented for this tune; I was even convinced that there were bird noises on the album version, but then I realised they were outside my window- even the birds can't resist a sing-a-long!
