In Their Own Words

The Joff Winks band, despite their offbeat name, produce electric laced rock with a thoughtful outlook. Given radio blessing in Zane Lowe's Fresh Meat battle of the bands, Joff Winks Band emerged victorious and with new vibrancy in their music. Joff Winks Band have also supported The Earlies, Regina Spektor and Ray La Montagne, some of the forerunners in the off-kilter, indie creativity stakes. It's a sharp tune with buzzing guitars, driving drumming and cutting vocals culminating in an upbeat, emphatic chorus, although this is a little bit of an anticlimax in comparison with the forceful verses. Melodic piano notes ring out during a lull in the stormy guitar; instrumentally there's a lot of variety, which makes for an interesting song and, although they may be newcomers, Joff Winks Band have a very cohesive sound.

'Someone Else's Words' is an astute tune and the first thirty seconds are hard-hitting, but the chorus fizzles out a little too much for my liking. Joff Winks Band is far from a write off with a breezy, bright song that sets itself firmly apart from the pop dirge.
