roisin murphy
There is nothing especially wrong with this track. It is soulful, funky, and inoffensive accessible pop, which will stick in the brain and you may well find yourself humming it without even realizing you’re doing it. It is catchy yet unremarkable and sadly doesn’t quite have the class of the massive Moloko hits, I’d be surprised if it has any great lasting impact.
That said it is a perfectly enjoyable track even if it isn’t pulling up any trees. Roisin Murphy has a pleasant voice, which is well suited to this kind of electro pop. The multi-layered productions are quite interesting and the overall feel to the track is reminiscent of Prince. It is a feel good tune, all be it with lyrics that are in parts described by Murphy as Demented. “If we’re in love, we should make love, when will this be?” the frustrated line that provides the catchy chorus hook. The best analogy for this song is to say it’s like ordering a regular meal in a fast food restaurant, perfectly satisfying up to a point but it does leave you wanting more but not certain if you’ll have the same again.
This is Roisin’s first proper single as a solo artist and follows a series of Eps that featured all the tracks that can be found on ‘Ruby Blue’, her debut album that is already out. She can also be seen on the Volvic Stage at this summers V Festival.
