Tender But Anthemic
Jonathan Rice has to be one of the budding talents of 2005, with an album receiving fantastic reviews and a support slot with REM, the 21 year old seems to be set for a whole life of musical success.
'Kiss Me Goodbye' is simply magic, from the moment that the first powerful chords erupt and Rice's unique, slightly rough around the edge vocals begin, I'm won over. The chorus is masterful, with chugging emphatic chords suddenly giving way to highlight the tenderness in Rice's voice as he sings, "kiss me goodbye" in this relenting pause. The firm rock guitars and percussion support Rice's voice and the quirky lyrics, "Like an ugly James Dean I was waiting for you", perfectly. It's the soundtrack to the life affirming split in over-dramatic teen dramas (Rice's tracks have already feature in The OC and Smallville), but it's even more marvellous for it.
'Maryann Is Lost' takes a more gentle tone with acoustic guitar buzzing in and out with the sensitive vocals from this young songsmith. 'May The Road Rise To Meet You' adds some beautiful female vocals to Rice's mix and the two voices wind their way delicately round each other in this elegant folk tune.
