Escaping the norm
Decoration seem to have blended Jarvis Cocker's cheeky vocal style, cutting lyrics and a mellow, very indie guitar style; along with backing from John Peel, this sets them up as something really quite exciting.
'Escape Routine' is lithe and shimmers with oblique social commentary, "You're endlessly e-baying for blood" - almost worthy of Morrissey himself. Balmy and crisp, it distils the very essence of good, smart indie in its chiming guitars and compendious but compelling rhythms.
'Candidate' burns with crashing percussion, third person lyrics and draws the reader in with the angular, heady lead guitar and driving pace, while 'Interested' takes a slower and more abstracted approach. Beginning with aching guitars it soon melts into a quilt of sound that absorbs the listeners into its melancholy strains.
If there was a current chart band whom Decoration ressembled most, it would probably be Maximo Park, which is a pretty awesome comparison with the latter's chart success and festival acclaim. Still, Decoration are something pretty special and unique right now - John Peel never got it wrong.
