Flying high
Brit pop may have burst onto the scene back in the 1990s but its influences are still living on and The Aeroplanes are testament to that. With a hint of The La's and a touch of Ocean Colour Scene thrown in for good measure, it could be claimed that The Aeroplanes are just another indie band trying to recreate the Brit pop of the past, but dismiss them at your peril because they are destined to be huge. They may have taken lessons in Brit pop 101 but that does not mean they are turning out the same old songs. The Aeroplanes have succeeded in taking the best elements from their influences and making them their own and in the process they have created a fantastic three track debut EP.
Hailing from Liverpool, The Aeroplanes consist of four guys who in the simplest terms make excellent, original songs. 'Don't Stop Me' maybe the single from the EP but unlike many debut EPs, there is not a weak track on it. With its uplifting and pounding beat, 'Don't Stop Me' does stand apart from the other two tracks simply because of its high energy levels and its catchiness. However, even this is not enough to detract from the quality of the other songs. 'Somedays' contains a tranquil melody and reflective, graceful lyrics, making it a perfect song to simply chill out to after a long day. 'Black Hole' on the other hand is a bleaker look at life, dragging you back to reality, and yet it is still an amazing song. All three tracks differ slightly and in doing so demonstrate perfectly the ability of the band, with each song showing how great The Aeroplanes are. It is rare for a band to release a debut EP which actually grabs your attention instantly and holds onto it throughout but these guys from Liverpool manage to do just that, proving that there is more to them and suggesting that there is still more to come.
Most bands would be ecstatic if they could release these songs as three separate singles, as they are stand alone hits by themselves. The Aeroplanes are a band that you should get excited about and one you should definitely keep listening out for because if this sets the standard for their musical ability, then the album should be phenomenal. Lead vocalist, Chris Kearney sings on 'Black Hole' that "Music is my saviour". Well, if that is the case then we should all follow The Aeroplanes as they are on the right path!
