Pushing the envelope? Hah.
Not since Love Shack has a song been so completely off the chart that it has entered the stratosphere. Envelope are not a house band for the Royal Mail sorting office workers. No, they are a Swedish-French quartet who live in North Yorkshire. They produce summer tinted pop music that is both frenetic and mellow in equal measure. The sound - oddly - has a Spanish vibe about it with easy guitars and powerful vocals, tasked with the delivery of deliciously meandering lyrics, making up the majority of the sound. Sister In Love is reminiscent of the Love Shack song and many an early eighties dance act. The Nicotines, the second track on this single release, is superb and, in the same moment, oddly hilarious. The band have regenerated but they still wish to pay homage to a previous incarnation of their music who, judging by the title of the song, liked the odd puff or two on a summer evening.
Listening to the various and, indeed, varied remixes of Sister In Love is a journey and a half. The frenetic pace is frightening and charming. Given that Envelopes have recently supported Clor, one assumes that fame can only be a short drive away and is presently stuck in traffic. Sister In Love is a stunning debut from a band that will become favourites to a wide variety of loyal music fans. Embrace the Envelope.
