Geek rock
Geeks never used to be cool. The former bastion of all things tragic and anti mainstream have in the past few years, thanks to the wonders of postmodernism, evolved so it seems anyone with a skinny tie and awkward posture can shag birds. Strange. What is not quite so strange is the notion of the geek as an underdog, quietly struggling away against adversity but always likely to have the last laugh. Enter Mr Ben Gibbard, Death Cab For Cutie head honcho and all round super nerd. The voice of an angel, the glasses of an Open University professor one might say. Case in point but, geek or no geek, anyone that can craft such stellar indie music as 'Soul Meets Body,' the first single taken from the bands latest album 'Plans,' with such sweet intent, endearing lyrics and overall heroic sheen more than deserves his share of the women.
Already over-ground sensations in the US, as Death Cab's stock continues to rise, might we expect to see other maligned social groups as the next wave purveyors of all things cool? 'Gran-pop' anyone? Maybe not but with Death Cab For Cutie around, geeks are still cool and that's official.
