Free The Bees
It is hard to describe this album, other than it is very infectious; once you have played it you want to hear it again and again. Listening to The Bees is like going back to the 60’s and then whipping the best out of that decade and giving it a face lift. This is definitely an interesting experimental album that sounds like they had fun.
Opening with ‘These Are The Ghosts’ and moving quickly in to ‘Wash In The Rain’, we are given a good acoustic set. Which builds up for a more highly charged song; ‘No Atmosphere’, in which they try to fit in as many instrumentals as they can. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
‘Horsemen’ I swear I can hear an organ of some sort, but know in full reality it is nothing more than the keyboard player doing something clever! It is not until you hear ‘Chicken Payback’ that you could swear you are listening to a band that would have loved to have been a round during the 60’s. So much so they sound like early Rolling Stones, which obviously is a compliment.
'The Russian' is a great instrumental track, which could very easily grace any TV programme or film, just happens to be the longest track on the album. Before moving on to ‘I Love You’, has a great ‘R n B’ feel about it nice and slow which is very sensual. The pace picks up very slightly ‘The Start’ you could almost hear this on Heartbeat if The Bees had been about thirty odd years ago!
‘Hourglass’ keeps the same pace and then picks up speed ‘Go Karts’, which opens with what sounds like Lennon and McCartney singing, it makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. It is a fantastic track. Before moving on to ‘One Glass of Water’ again heavily influenced by the 60’s as is the final track ‘This Is The Land’.
This a great album and it is seems to be very easy to say they were influenced by the 60’s due to their sound. But no doubt I am wrong. This is an album well worth buying and listening too time and time again. As every time you listen to it you find something new and refreshing with it. Go out and buy it today!
