A little bit too much like Oasis?
A young, angst ridden four-piece rock and roll band by the name of Guile hailing from the Midlands, are set to release an all new debut single this October. As dark as their home of Cannock (and apparently it doesn't get much darker then that or so the band claim), Guile bring with them a pastiche of different styles so typical of modern British Rock, otherwise known as Indie. 'My Salvation' brings with it bits and pieces of what makes Oasis and BRMC so popular while keeping a little bit of their own sound in the mix too.
However, 'My Salvation' does tend to drag on a little too much. The vocalist's quality of voice bears a huge resemblance to that of Liam Gallagher's voice; boasting the same droning, nasal tone with a tendency to shift into whining without warning. Liam Gallagher's voice though, for some strange reason, can be quite intriguing and easy to tolerate and does seem to have some purpose towards the sound Oasis create, this cannot really be said for Guile, whose dark and miserable mood is really too much to take even in small doses. The rest of the band however, are quite well structured and the guitarists seem to display a wide spectrum of skill and influences in their work, brewing up a mind-bending mash-up between Spaceman 3, Oasis and The Verve. Driving away over constantly rolling drums, the instrumental band really do create some atmospheric and beautiful riffs, such a shame that they're difficult to focus on under such grating, droning vocals that appear to drain the music of all life somewhat.
Alas, the tone and rhythm is more upbeat and more tolerable in 'You Had It All' and the vocals seem better suited to the racy, daring style of the song but really there is no outstanding difference between the two tracks other than the speed. The band themselves really do seem to have a gleam of talent burning somewhere underneath the blandness of the general sound but with the constant droning of the vocals this can be very easy to overlook. Guile seem to be another one of these Indie bands influenced by Oasis that are so influenced by them that they can eventually sound a little bit too much like them and as is the case with Guile, it doesn't usually work out well. However, this isn't to say that Guile will not continue to grow and do as well for themselves as they currently are and indeed they are the perfect band for those into Oasis, Radiohead and The Verve.
