Lush Sonic Politics
When a single is described as a "scathing attack on the Neo Conservative agenda [...] of the Western World's Politicians" by the band's publicity company I was expecting a whiney lifeless rant of a song, but I should have known better as the single in question comes from the Mercury nominated and consistently brilliant Elbow.
The bass growls like an angry, yet adorable Doberman supporting a lush sonic arrangement of guitars, garbled pianos and synths all blended into one big lovely anthemic blanket to wrap around you and keep you warm on the long winter nights.
Despite the rich arrangement nothing sounds out of place, the track is slow but grooves with an inevitability that drags you from the punchy intro all the way to the triumphant climax at the end of the song. The only let down is the fade at the end of the song, you just don't want it to stop!
All in all this is a great track from Elbow and the long time they've spent away working on the new album has obviously paid off. The more you listen, the more you like.
