Northern (indie) Rock
There's been a lot of talk about aliens and whether or not they exist, well I am beginning to think that earlier in the year, a spaceship landed and dropped off some pods, which eventually broke open to reveal a collection of people able to play instruments and write very similar tunes. I am running out of bands to compare each to but here are a few: Maximo Park, The Futureheads, Franz Ferdinand, Kasabian, Athlete etc. Infrasound, of course have come from the same spaceship - which isn't to say that they aren't by any means any worse or indeed better than the aforementioned bands, but that's the real problem.
'Final Warning' starts off with a deep riff from guitarist Joel Downson that sounds a little like Ocean Colour Scene, and the vocals by John Walker are confident enough albeit in the vein of a lot of other bands, and have a hint of shouting as opposed to singing about them. There is something about Infrasound that has me likening them to the Happy Mondays if they updated themselves, although I can't put my finger on just why. All in all it's exactly what you'd expect from a Northern indie band, and touring with the great Queen Adreena isn't bad by anybodies standards.
The bonus here is a b-side called, 'Our Own Way' which is a nice enough little number with deep bass and a slightly more funky guitar riff. There are harmonies that although don't sound the most tuneful, somehow give it a nice English charm of its very own.
Infrasound won't set the world on fire anymore than anyone else but this will be another tune for the uni students to nod their floppy hairdo's to, and really that's all you could ever wish for, right? It's also worth a mention that the front cover has words that I can only assume is what they feel people stereotype Leeds folks as: Northern, Beaten, Hard Up, & Work Shy. Interestingly accurate, or so I'm told...
