A passionate and flamboyant mix of dance and Indie.
It's been a long time since a really refreshing and feel good Indie band has come along with a dance-like beat and entrancing sound. Indie and dance/techno genres are not usually two sounds that go together well, yet new band Broken Dolls seem to be an exception to that rule. With their new single 'Any Other Day/What The Hell', Broken Dolls are set to prove that boundaries are put there to be pushed and rules made to be broken.
Boasting an almost 80's sounding funky beat and an incredibly catchy introduction, 'Any Other Day' is a very complex and layered track that displays incredible mixing talent and heavy beats. Comprising of several synthesised layers, a prominent and complex drum beat that bounds along with a dominant and powerful bass line that dictates the main dancing force behind the song, the track begins to mutate and shift between being of Indie descent to becoming a powerful dance anthem destined to move you. Vocals and pumped-up distorted guitars dance upon the main synth melody line encouraging the almost sunny, repetitive tune to rise above consciousness and infect your mind. Yet the obvious influence of Indie is apparent in the desolate and emotional lyrics that talk of worlds breaking apart and minds breaking down but of incredible defiance and strength, especially in the sentimental lines of the chorus. The quality of this track is that it is so infectious; the beat will always find a way to move your feet and make you dance no matter what you do. Feel-good and delightfully retro, 'Any Other Day' has a lot of bright appeal and potential that will see its success in many clubs everywhere.
'What The Hell' is a complete contrast to its brighter, disco-esque counterpart and displays that well-known and dreary melancholic sound so well associated with typical Indie. Gentle guitar riffs that sound like rain upon a window on a grey and cold afternoon bring in the mellow ballad with an atmospheric and melodic feel as weeping and coarse vocals sweep overhead of a purring yet repetitive bass line. As the music flows into a faintly brighter and more optimistic sounding chorus, it is apparent that Broken Dolls can experiment with emotion through all sorts of musical horizons and this is something that the mainstream music industry has needed to see for a very long time, never before has Indie sounded so unique and refreshing!
