Cut Copy - going nowhere
To get straight to the point, this is another one of those, influenced heavily by the nineteen eighties records. However it isn't just a straight copy of that period of electronic alternative pop, a sound spearheaded by Depeche Mode, New Order and Teardrop Explodes.
The melancholy, borderline miserable sounding vocals are here, the electronic body to the music but with just sufficient rock edge to make it cool is present, but although it sounds very eighties it is bang up to date at the same time.
Some of the keyboard loops and effects that are layered over the track have a real Daft Punk quality to them, think 'One More Time' and you're on the right lines.
So far all I've done is tell you how much like other things this track is, which might appear that it is lacking in it's own independence. OK so the influences are quite clear, but to use a rock example, that hasn't stopped Oasis from making quality guitar music and likewise 'Going Nowhere' is a cracking club record.
It would probably have benefited from a summer release but then it is summer in their home country Australia so we can let them off on that point.
The album is called 'Bright Like Neon Lights' and according to the liner notes is a collection of "Digital Love Songs". If this single is anything to go by then it is an album well worth a listen.
