Supergrass - Fin

The great thing about what Supergrass are doing right now is that, were you to hear one of the tracks from their latest album without knowing it was them, there's every chance that you wouldn't realize you were listening to the same band that brought us speaker busting Indy classics such as 'Sun Hits The Sky', 'Moving' and 'Caught by the Fuzz'. They've taken to the softer, more melodic and acoustic lead tracks with an authority that would suggest they'd been doing that as their main party piece for the decade or more that they've been making music.

'St. Petersburg' and 'Low C' were both singles that had that instant grab factor, 'Fin' needs a little more attention before you start to appreciate it's quality. Although the last two were more stripped down than we've been used to with this band, they were still relatively speaking up-beat songs, this one takes things down at least a couple of notches and is a positively dreamy close to 'Road to Rouen' in comparison to the previous single releases.

Something that has struck me as a possible influence when listening to the album is some of John Lennon's solo work, I'm thinking his more chilled tracks, and 'Fin' fits that comparison in my mind well.

It is unlikely to set the charts on fire but that in itself is no bad thing. This track is further proof that Supergrass are one of Britain's best rock bands, the latest album is well worth a listen.
