Dreamy Indie
Smouldering LA princesses The Like are far from your novelty girly pop act; from the instant 'June Gloom' breezes in, a fabulous world of indie breaks out, which climaxes in the forceful chorus, "Looks like the end of days". This tune is full of whiplash 90's indie charm and its brash melodic guitars are going to take your cranium by storm. Single 'What I Say and What I Mean' is an insistent bright affair full of riot grrrl resonance and addictive uplifting fervour.
'You Bring Me Down' revels in psychedelic harmonies and dreamy vocals, not the ingredients we'd usually see mixed in with a rollicking guitar solo, but that's exactly what happens in The Like's wonderful world of swirling sounds and sighing guitars.
'Bridge To Nowhere' is an ethereal pop fable with a blanket of acoustic guitar chords and a jaunty tambourine; it's like a more spaced out version of Alanis Morissette's powerful numbers. Suddenly, just when you're getting used to the soulful smooth lyrics, 'Under The Paving Stones' crashes in and ups the pace 100% with its anxious punk guitar backing and trembling vocals, "A leader only leads when no one else knows what to do".
'Too Late' is a rampaging 3 and a half minute of frenetic, stirring power, the catchy bass line kicks off the driving rhythm in one of the most endearing tracks on the album. Weary melody 'The One' still manages to shimmer sweetly through the transparent lyrics, "I'll never be the one you love" while 'Falling Away' sports a ballsy bass part, which gets you to your feet even before the jangly chorus kicks in. Closer, 'Waves Never Break' is a subtle lullaby swaying with melancholy and airy as a spring breeze.
The Like create a luscious empire somewhere between riot grrrl and psychedelia where their dreamy songs bloom, always keeping just on the right side of pop and inspiring an upbeat outlook amongst listeners. The girls may be well-connected with at least one parent each with a firm standing in the music industry; however they're always talented and 'Are You Thinking What I'm Thinking?' definitely deserves a listen.
