Just whip it!

London five-piece band White Rose Movement come out with what can only be described as an 80's revival number in 'Girls In The Back'. The song is a fairly simple one which leans a little more than a passing resemblence to New Wave band, Devo's 1980 hit 'Whip It' (which may or may not be about self-loving, or even a reference to inhaling nitrous oxide from whipped cream cans!).

So where other bands may be copying sounds from the New Romantics era, White Rose Movement can on the one hand be applauded for not going down that route, but mocked for going even further back to a route that no self respecting person would put on a map, let a lone venture down. This type of music went out of fashion as quickly as it entered and there is no conincidence with that fact!

On the plus sides, the more imaginative of you could well try and search out a slight industrial/glam sound here that could at a stretch be a cross between Rachel Stamp and The Newlydeads, with less guitars and happy lyrics. However, the guitars go MIA for the most part as the electro sounds from the keyboards and heavy bass line give the simple music to a simple dated song.

One thing that is worth pointing out is that of the three songs of theirs I have heard this is the only one for me that doesn't work. The rumbling base line and chugging guitars of 'Alsation' is brilliant, and a more sensable electro-rock song 'Love Is A Number' has a sounds that clashes the 80's with todays more contempory sound with posative results.

So to recap, 'Girls In The Back' isn't their strongest song. Don't buy it, whip it!
