Childs play
Poor old Euros Childs, as part of the commercially unsuccessful (but critically acclaimed) Gorky's Zygotic Mynci he never really achieved the level of success his sweet, at times psychedelic, folk music deserved. Therefore this reviewer is one of many pleased to see him returning to his reinvigorated best in 2006. Hot on the heels of debut solo album "Chops" comes this punning single that's not so much a vast departure from the Gorky's sound as some perhaps expected, but more of a refinement of that band's poppier elements. "Costa Rita" is a minimalistic piano led affair, Euro's sweet, high voice taking centre stage against a backdrop of Casio beats and the odd bit of recorder. Child-like in its simplicity "Costa Rita" is a wonderful slice of summery twee pop. The lyrics might proclaim that "ice cream sells when it's hot / but it don't sell so well when it's not" but whack on this record and you'll be heading for your nearest supermarket to get in some Haagen-Dazs. Yummy!
