Gorillaz take a chance.
The collaborated brainchild of Damon Alban and Jamie Hewlett give us another thoughtful and intelligent single, in 'Kids With Guns'. Originally dubbed the first 'virtual hip-hop group', Gorillaz have found themselves a pigeon-hole-less place in the market with such a widespread appeal that you have to wonder why this hasn't been exploited before.
'Kids With Guns' has a simple backbeat with Damon's signature laidback vocal delivery which allows a more in-depth interpretation of the lyrics. There is a slight lazy-electro-pop feel to this song which includes guest vocals from Neneh Cherry.
B-side 'El Manana' isn't quite as strong, although still follows in the same chilled out way, and it glides over you, soothing as opposed to grating your ears like whispered poetry.
Perhaps it's this simplicity and expert execution of original songs time and time again, that has hit the right note with many of the musical listeners across the world. Hat's off to Mr Alban who got out of the tiresome and repetitive merry-go-round of British Indie Rock, and influenced through his creativity, an entirely different musical experience. 'Kids With Guns' is certainly not their best single, but it's still a lot better then most of the 'music' singles being released out there today.
