A voice deeper than a bottomless pit and a chemistry on this record that'd surprise the periodic table
He's been described as 'Barry White without the sexiness'; former Tindersticks' man Stuart A. Staples now seems to have found that sexiness though, as he sings alongside Lhasa de Sela on his new single 'That Leaving Feeling', taken from Leaving Songs. It is a lovely, pacey acoustic ditty, and the male/female dynamic works to great effect within it, there's a chemistry there that you can just hear in the record.
He's produced a very worthy single in 'That Leaving Feeling' and B-side 'There Is A Path' too is nice and tranquil, fulfilling in the candle light, wholesome and bright as the sun begins to set... Not many artists surpass this, except maybe Scotland's Grant Campbell, who has a voice that could sink a thousand ships, an alluring tone that is quite unequalled in music today, but Staples is a strong songwriter in his own right and this is proof.
So, as seed no. 2, only to a man who seemed to fall to this planet from those harmonic spheres that the ancient Greeks believed in, Stuart A. Staples is well worth checking out and digging, His music is nice, simple, effective and with Lhasa de Sela, sexy as well.
