Smile like you mean it! Oh the irony
The seldom smiling Pink Floyd front man has surprised many this year with his latest solo album ('On An Island'), it certainly has much more of an early Floyd feel to it and is all the better for it.
The latest single 'Smile' is probably not an obvious choice for a single release, it's slow, fairly mellow and would stand out like a sore thumb on TOTP! For all that though it's great, simple but effective springs to mind and in the likely absence of any new Floyd material for the foreseeable future, this is about as close as you could get. 'Smile' would nestle in nicely to many of the early 70's Floyd albums, the guitar is gentle and lilting and it really could have been lifted from 'More'.
Gilmour's vocals are understated but complimentary and the fact that such a well recognised guitarist has chosen not to drown the song in indulgent solos goes a long way to making 'Smile' the great track that it is. There may not be any new Floyd material but whilst Gilmour is producing tracks of this quality I can't see too many fans complaining!
