A Mellow Teaser
Beginning with simple piano notes and glockenspiel chimes accompanied by soft percussion, 'One Nerve' is a wistful number, which builds to an angry, passionate chorus with a raw edge and easy hook. The vocals are mellow and moody, brooding over an unsavoury relationship before they pack in the punches in the chorus. It's an easygoing, sultry affair, which keeps moving and drawing the listener in.
'Come Down' has the same dynamics, building from minimalist percussion into a ruminating mix of vocal harmonies and edgy rhythm. Why this is a b-side amazes me because it captures waves of emotion in its tense percussion and edgy bassline and the fragile chorus is tear evoking with soaring sorrow. Simply beautiful.
Clayhill have two great tunes here, even if it is debatable which the lead track should be. If you like tense and direct mellow indie tunes laced with emotion then try this single.
