Phlegm filled punk rock for your ears.
Rank Deluxe offer up a scratchy punk sound in a style that would appal Sandi Thom, perhaps its because these boys seem closer to the real deal than that twisted charlatan could ever grasp. And its very unlikely that Rank Deluxe would be gadding about flowers in their hair.
With a sneering vocal delivery that almost lets the listener hear the phlegm and mucus of spit building up in the vocals as the insults and swear words pour out of the speakers. Musically, its a racket, not in a bad way but in a very simple, uncultured manner. The Rank Deluxe attack the song and dont over exaggerate it with fancy solos or clean production. If you are after something raw this summer, 'Style' could be just the job.
'What Do You Want' leans more on the reggae side of scuzzy punk and is more of a song than the lead tracks sleazy offering. A fine compliment to the main serving and indicating there is more to the band than just rehashed throwback punk and a useful indicator of whats to come.
Its also a safe bet that the live shows will be an absolute riot with plenty of power and aggression going on.
No doubt considering themslves to be the sound of the streets, Rank Deluxe dont paint a pretty picture but as a nostalgic throwback, it fits the bill nicely. Hopefully future releases will build on the potnetial and showcase the band as having a relevance to the now and future, as opposed to just nodding to what has gone before.
