I dunno...are you a bit mental then?
Skye Gordon will be familiar to all and sundry being, as she was the lead singer of defunct chill-out favourites Morcheeba. With over five million albums shifted (including the ubiquitous 'Big Calm' - even I've got a copy - and even more bizarrely, my ex used to have that coffee table in her old house), Skye has finally decided to strike out on her own by releasing 'What's Wrong With Me', ahead of her debut album.
This meandering, electro-soul ballad is a great showcase for Skye's elegant, soothing and irrepressibly smooth voice - and it's fantastic to note that it's not as bland as a Bernard Matthew's Turkey Roll either. She allows her guard to slip on a number of occasions, and the snippets of everyday diction that make it through add warmth and a sense of vulnerability to proceedings - it sounds more human. After all, I still reckon that Sade sounds as vocally potent and rip-roaringly thrilling as spending a decade discussing the weather with Jimmy Tarbuck and Fatima Whitbread but then maybe that's just me.
'What's Wrong With Me?' isn't going to win any awards for originality - but then, it wasn't designed to. Skye's voice is perfectly suited to this material. Sure, she ain't gonna frighten Tina Turner or Aretha Franklin into retirement, but if chilled-out, lazy, after hours soul is your bag, you can't go far wrong with this track. Nowt wrong with it - or her - whatsoever.
