I prefer Special K myself

The new release from electro-indie outfit Kobai is a pulsating, hyperactive multilayered beast that befits their six-piece setup. A great undulating axe lick is perfectly buttressed by some fuzzy synths, while Ross Hinton's ethereal vocal is delicately balanced on the precipice of mouthy menace and shouty cynicism.

So why an R13 rating of only six? Well while it's good, it's not quite loud enough to be heard over the crowd of similarly rumbustious indie pop that's choking up the scene at the moment. And in order to surf above the sweat-drenched, skinny-jeaned pretenders and earn their place on the main stage, Kobai need to knock some genuinely idiosyncratic and revelatory flourishes into their material in an effort to set the pace, not merely wait for the front runners to crash out in a blaze of glory.

While all's said and done though, 'Serotonin' is an enjoyable slab of pop of which Kobai should be proud. Dismiss them at your peril...
