An Indie Folk Gem
A jaunty mixture of deliberately placed guitar notes, sentimental vocals that brim with honesty and impulsion and a sparkling folk twang is what's offered by Liam Frost and associates.
Beginning with single, 'The City Is At A Standstill', an aural epic with expansive sighing vocals that could easily introduce a U2 track, but then give way to the intimate, capricious vocals of Liam Frost.
'The Mourners of St Paul's' plays expertly with 'It's A Wonderful World', just one of the precious little snippets you can extract from this intelligent and moving album. 'If Tonight We Could Only Sleep' is a lilting folk song riding on a tentative plucked acoustic guitar part and pattering strings
'She Painted Pictures' and 'Paperboats' bounce along with a jaunty country assurance and probably plenty of whisky burning in their bellies, while 'Shall We Dance' is a balmy number introduced by a harmonica refrain.
'This Is Love' and 'Is This Love?' make a thoughtful marriage midway through the album; the former a delicate and slightly awkward affirmation of love, while its careening companion is a balmy, retrospective hymn to past confusion and hindsight.
'Where The Spectres Dance' is a passionate, compulsive listen with the honest drive of fellow folk effigy Conor Oberst, but a more tender take which a rich range of instrumentation and luscious tunes. These 10 tracks sparkle with charisma and dreamy emotional openess.
