A Confusing Listen
Animal Liberation Orchestra have a really soulful, folky 70s kind of sound, a strange mixture of funk, electronica, soul, pop, jazz, disco, R & B and blues, and probably any number of other genres. The band all sound like really talented musicians; and they make the improvised feel and the experimentation with styles sound really easy, but because each song on this single has a different feel and sound it's a bit of a mash and at times it doesn't really work.
Lyrically 'Girl, I Wanna Lay You Down' is incredibly cheesy and comes across as an ironic take on R & B/Funk, but it's hard to tell if this is intentional or not. The combination of over the top lyrics and the mixture of styles makes this single quite often a confusing listen, never one thing or another, unsure of its target audience and really hard to get a handle on.
