Rock Is Back; Welcome Home Old Pal
Finally, from amidst the bombardment of new rave bands brandishing their glo sticks and from amongst the emo masses smearing their faces in black eyeliner as they cry into their myspace pages, comes a band who simply deliver good old fashioned rock and roll set to a dirty bass line and brandishing swagger inducing vocals.
Soft raw vocals kick off proceedings on 'Take You Home', almost talking over a gentle guitar accompaniment before the Devastations break loose with a volley of chugging guitars, crushing drums and urgent beats sped along by dirty rock vocals that strut around with the swagger of Kasabian and the emotional depths of a Dirty Pretty Things or Libertines track. Uplifting and emitting a fistful of pride and egotism with every line, 'Take You Home' builds to a rousing climax, full of wailing guitars, captivating forays of electric feedback and full throttle vocals. It's what rock and roll was built for and thank god it's alive and kicking with this Australian band.
Offering a glimpse at their gentler side, Devastations also provide a b side cover of The Velvet Underground's 'I Found A Reason', boasting an impassioned soulful side tied together nicely with the simplicity of a melodic piano that slide perfectly alongside the Devastations naturally smooth harmonising. So, bin the glo sticks, put down the black eyeliner and step away from your myspace page, rock is back, all dirty and doused in arrogance; welcome home old friend, what took you so long?
