Off target
'Target' is the third single to be taken from Embrace's fifth album 'This New Day' and the band will be hoping it secures them their seventh top ten chart placing in a rather topsy-turvy career. Where once they aspired to match the more bombastic moments of Oasis the McNamara brothers now seem content to churn out rather pale facsimiles of U2's most recent material on the evidence of this single at any rate. Alas Danny McNamara is no Bono in the vocal department and no amount of strings can disguise this fact. 'Target' sounds like Embrace by numbers, and although it's a marked improvement on their underwhelming World Cup anthem 'World At Your Feet' it lacks the emotional power of the band's best material. 'Target' strives hard to make an impact but the lack of a significant chorus makes Youth's glossy production job rather impotent. Beyond the band's loyal hardcore following it's hard to see who this single will appeal to.
