Starshaped?
Multi-national quartet 747s are friends of the Arctic Monkeys and former tour mates of The Kooks. Thankfully this single sounds nothing like the aforementioned Mercury Music Prize winners or Luke Pritchard's motley crew of Razorlight-baiting fops. The 747s appear to be wholly disinterested in churning out garage pop filler and are clearly in thrall to prime, Britpop era Blur and Suede circa 'Coming Up'. 'Death Of A Star' strives manfully to live up to the intriguing "Bowie meets Curtis Mayfield meets 2001: A Space Odyssey" promise of vocalist Oisin Leech and it almost manages to succeed in achieving this nigh on impossible feat. Consequently this taster for forthcoming debut album 'Zampano' is a richly melodic exercise in vaguely glam indie rock 'n' roll. It's pleasant and enjoyable, but like a lot of the Britpop inspired guitar bands radio loves right now, will anyone remember 747s ten years down the line? It seems unlikely on this evidence, but I'd love to be proven wrong.
