A promising second single from Manchester band.
The imaginatively titled Snowfight in the City Centre (who I predict will soon be referred to as Snowfight) release their second single 'Listen', amid comparisons to U2, Keane and Doves, and multiple uses of the word 'epic'. Despite debatable comparisons to the aforementioned MOR bands, the Manchester six piece managed to pull off a highly enjoyable single. Whilst not staggering in its originality 'Listen' is a mid-tempo song which builds subtly and showcases the mature style of the band. With a slightly 1980s indie feel meeting a more contemporary sound, the song develops on several levels. The band has been together for six years already and it shows. There is none of the brash, impulsive sound of many current bands, but a collection of musicians slowly approaching the peak of their talents.
Backed with 'Big Ideas' recorded live for an XFM session, a slower effort with more focus on the harmonies than building the kind of climax featured on the title track. Towards the end however the song does feature an instrumental sequence which builds nicely towards a rounded finish. This pairing of songs showcases that Snowfight...are able to produce songs with different moods and sounds, making the idea of more material from them fall on the right side of anticipatory.
