Totally Unique

Searching for something a little out of the ordinary? Longing for music that is as far removed from the current hip scene as possible? Then look no further, Adjagas could just be the answer to all your prayers. Hailing from the northernmost reach of Scandinavia – Sweden, Norway and Finland, Adjagas are a duo unlike anyone else currently plying their musical trade and as such offer a somewhat difficult listen of highly interesting songs. Adopting their name from the Sami (nomadic tribe) word for the mental state between waking and sleeping, Adjagas have perhaps the most appropriate name in music as their hypnotic lullabies gently entice and entrance, slowly weaving their mystical allure throughout. Sure, the male/female double act may sing in their native tongue making for exact translation to be near on impossible to those not familiar with the mother tongue, but there is something fascinating in their music that transcends the need for immediate translation, making for a collection of songs that are intriguingly unique.

Opening proceedings with 'Lihkulas', Adjagas immediately begin their hypnotic spell as an almost tribal chant kicks in over a constant drum beat that conjures images of a native Indian American gathering. From this the duo choose to pepper their tribal flow with a banjo of all instruments, making for an upbeat jaunty slice of hedonistic hypnotism. Yes, Adjagas is far from being your average act and as such they take awhile to digest, after all this is far from your paint by numbers pop hit. Patience is however supposedly a virtue, one that is paid in full by the time you reach recent single offering 'Mun Ja Mum'. Hauntingly mesmerizing, 'Mun Ja Mun' is a sedate affair, smothered in wonderfully captivating ethnic chanting that beautifully opens up an amazing soundscape purely for your enjoyment. Undoubtedly the stand out track of the album, 'Mun Ja Mun' is a song that everyone should take time out to cherish and revel in its sheer beauty.

Adjagas don't produce the catchy hit, they don't make songs for you to sing along to in the car and you certainly won't find them dominating the music channels on your TV but every once in a while we all crave something a little different, something that strays a little from the herd and Adjagas dutifully comply as they tentatively take you away from the stresses of life and open up a vast soundscape consisting of beautifully mesmerising songs. You may not understand the lyrics and you may find that this is an act that demands your full undivided attention but in return Adjagas deliver something that no one else is even attempting to offer, let alone produce.
