New single from London band.
After reading a rather brief press release likening London-based group Helene to the likes of Rilo Kiley and Nico, the band have tweaked my interest as well as my anticipation. With rather European sounding vocals from Helene, giving an easy comparison to Nina Pearson met with the gentle melancholy caress of Jenny Lewis, 'Apostille' is immediately beguiling. The song itself is breezy and on the right side of catchy, with a title referring to the legal document needed to marry in another country. The music is quiet enough to support and enhance the vocals without overpowering them, making this song a glorious listening experience.
B-side 'No Choice' is just as good if not better than it's A-side, with its slightly mournful, permissive vocals being met with subtle and sensitively soft musical accompaniment. With echoes of Hope Sandoval and Stina Nordenstam this single will appeal to anyone who enjoys hopeful indie featuring distinctive vocals.
