Relax!
Is this some kind of sick post-modern joke? A single called "Acceptable In The 80s" that sounds like it's been beamed in from a suburban discotheque somewhere near Southend-on-Sea... in 1982! It couldn't scream eighties pastiche any more if it wore big neon flashing lights round its neck that proudly proclaimed "I'M A SINGLE FROM THE 80'S" while wearing a "Frankie Says Relax!" t-shirt.
Over a full on disco-pop backing, young Calvin does his best Prince impression while raising an arched eyebrow in the direction of his closest peer and fellow eighties apologist Mylo. A few years ago he would have been laughed at (anyone else remember pre-fame Les Rythmes Digitales?) now he'll be lauded as pop's next big thing. Having said all that "Acceptable In The 80s" is surely a contender for best disco single of the year, it's hooky, infectious and so brash and bold you can't help but secretly like it.
