Smoother Than Cranberries

Former Cranberry Dolores O'Riordan has truly blossomed with her first solo offering, a mellow but engaging song with a rather 80s dynamic that sees occasional snatches of guitar burst through the thick and slightly unsettled guitars. It's a smooth tune with the enchanting pop vocals of The Corrs mixed with a jangly backing that keeps you hanging on for more. There are no jaws dropping from the innovation of this tune, but it's a gritty number that swells and has you hooked in its frustrated melody. One thing that's slightly bemusing is the title, 'Ordinary Day', with the chorus' peak being the repetition of the lyrics, "Beautiful girl"; I'm not sure how 'Ordinary Day' usurped this in appellation and I keep struggling not to use the soaring lyric as the title. However far from being ordinary, this is a pleasant swirl of chilled guitars and airy vocals that recalls the day when pleasant pop tunes with a frisson of angst were widely regarded as as intelligent as nutty indie creations.
