Experimental EP.

Those of you who enjoy what I can only describe as the preposterous indulgence of bands like Mogwai and Godspeed... will probably find you are already in disagreement with my viewpoint, and if your blood pressure is likely to be affected then it's probably best to look away now. You see, Dextro are being marketed as something along those lines, a style best described as 'post-rock' I suppose, but perhaps more accurately acknowledged by the description "meandering and pointless", yes that is indeed a quote from yours truly.

This single comprises of 'Hearts and Minds' and an additional and entirely needless three remixes. The original version features more than three minutes of average ambiance before the lyrics kick in, and when I say 'kick' what I really mean is waltz in and mumble something incoherent over and over. This song goes nowhere and spends a long time getting there, and lacks the skill and distinction of similar and easily more tolerable music by the likes of Sigur Ros.

The remixes contribute even less, although two of them manage to make the song shorter, which comes as a blessed relief after listening through in full. Dextro is apparently the solo project of one Ewan Mackenzie, and on the basis of this single I would suggest recruiting some additional musicians and fast. With so much other music in this style already floating around it's hard to imagine a demand for Dextro and if 'Hearts and Minds'is the best he has to offer I'd suggest a career in sales instead, as that is likely to be more lucrative.
