Indie-pop fans, add some Onions to your musical diet
This is the latest demo offering from Manchester three-piece 'Onions', a four track EP that is garnering the band some welcome attention. The lads claim music is "about having a damn fun time and just plain enjoying it", a refreshing attitude that clearly comes across in their funky tunes. Opener 'If It Ain't Gonna Happen Now' is the highlight, and clearly has the potential to be released as a single. Jangly guitars, brazen vocals and an elaborate synth phrase make for a danceable, uplifting tune guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
Second track 'Onion' opens with an all out funk-driven bass line that compliments the trebly guitar nicely. With an infectious chorus and lead guitar that accents the vocals, this tune is a slow burner that increases the rate of head nodding with each listen.
The final two tracks, 'Look Like a Loser' and 'Metal Belt' provide an element of depth to the EP, as they differ slightly in style. 'Look Like a Loser' implements an almost reggae-style jamming guitar to blend verse and chorus, while "Metal Belt" illustrates that the band can utilise changes with dynamics to create interesting sounds, complimented by the ever present brash guitars.
With a sound that could be likened to The Magic Numbers on happy pills conversing with The Beatles, Onions serve up a catchy slice of upbeat indie-pop, with chiming guitars and an interesting application of a moog synth. Fans of indie bands The Shins, The Rakes et al, why not try and add a slice of 'Onions' to your life. One to watch.
