Plodding single from Oxford band.

One of the most recent bands to be spawned by Oxford, This Town Needs Guns are a curious article. Their press release draws comparisons with Radiohead and Belle & Sebastian, but to these ears their sound is closer to bands like Sunny Day Real Estate who are mentioned amongst their influences.

'And Ill Tell You For Why' begins with rather whiny and grating vocals which sound more similar to those of American bands than anything homegrown. The lyrics fail to register as they are often low in the mix or delivered in a way that makes them difficult to make out, meaning I can only assume the lyrics mean little. Sadly little is what this song means to me, and is essentially almost five minutes of stodgy, plodding aural junk food. If this band were a support act I'd be sighing and yawning by this point.

'Wanna Come Back to My Room and Listen to some Belle and Sebastian' sounds like heavily America-influenced indie rock with vocals verging on emo being rolled out for the chorus. It's hard to believe this band hails from the same area as the likes of Supergrass and Radiohead, as everything about the sound and its delivery screams America. Clocking in at over five minutes which develop at a meandering rate, its safe to say that the most arresting and indeed interesting, aspect of this song is its title, and after hearing it I desperately want to be soothed by some Belle & Sebastian, please.

Perhaps young fans of other bland, MOR American bands might enjoy this, but I wouldn't necessarily bet on it. Unless their sound improves and becomes something more memorable its hard to imagine this town needing guns unless it's too arm themselves against such mediocrity.
