The Bees are buzzing with another fine effort
Fusing chilled out soul with elements of indie and pop, The Bees release second single 'Listening Man' from their critically acclaimed third album 'Octopus'. The band recorded all of 'Octopus' at their own basement studio on the Isle of Wight in tranquil and idyllic surroundings. Given the bands characteristic soothing, soulful sound, it was inevitable that the effect of this environment would transfer to the record. The relaxed nature of its conception is certainly evident on this track.
On first listen the track appears to be very simplistic in its nature, comprising of a simple yet effective drumbeat keeping everything together while the gentle and soulful vocals carry the melody. However, listen closely and you'll begin to appreciate the subtle deployment of chiming guitar and percussion, primarily bongos, that create a more dense, layered sound than first thought. Things liven up slightly in the chorus with a dominant brass section, yet even these moderate blasts drip with a sense of hazy summer sunshine.
This track is an example of The Bees at their best, creating soulful summery tunes that relax and calm. It's a slow-burner, but after a few listens it becomes apparent that this is a fine single that fans, new or old, will enjoy.
