It's a Biffy ballad that works, showing they're as versatile as they' are talented.
Scottish alternative heroes Biffy Clyro launch another offensive on the charts with the third single from their critically acclaimed album 'Puzzle'. With previous singles 'Saturday Superhouse' and 'Living is a Problem Because Everything Dies' both charting inside the top 20, there are high hopes for 'Folding Stars' to follow suit. Having threatened to break into the mainstream for years, 2007 has seen the trio reach their full potential; headlining the Kerrang! Tour, their own headline tour, Download, and of course a support slot with Muse at Wembley Stadium. 'Folding Stars' is sure to add to the list of impressive credentials.
What becomes immediately apparent is how different this sounds to the aforementioned singles. This is no fast paced, frenetic anthem in the vein of 'Saturday Superhouse', oh no. This is a mellow, accessible ballad, the lads proving that they're as versatile as they are talented. Having said this, the trademark guitar is still present, but it appears to be more restrained, Simon Neil having put a muzzle on to prevent it snarling and lashing out at passers by. However, this taming doesn't prevent the hooks from getting under the skin, and with a great sing-along chorus to boot, you know you're in trouble. This tune isn't shifting from in between your ears for a while yet. Throw some emotive vocals and simple, chiming melodies into the mix and you have a tune that will please radio listeners tuning in for the first time, as well as established and dedicated fans.
