Eugene McGuiness- Monsters under the bed.
Debut single 'Monsters under the Bed', out on the 2nd July, is unveiled from oddball Eugene McGuiness, possibly the quirkiest singer/ songwriter I have heard for some time. Comparisons are difficult, primarily because it is a rare find in lyrics regarding insomnia, well especially in this form.
Already receiving early air play from Radio one DJ's Huw Stephens, MCGuiness has quite clearly become a favourite with respected Steve Lamacq, performing three tracks for the live session part of his show. Signed to Double Six, a division of successful, yet independent record label Domino who have previously produced the likes of peculiar three piece Test Icicles and huge stars the Arctic Monkeys, Eugene McGuiness hopes this single can build up the hype for his debut album, due to be released July this year.
The song opens with an eerie silence, asking throughout the question- why do I spend all my time at night worrying about the problems I could have worried about all day? The talented twenty one year old describes avoiding the 'monsters under my bed', a clever metaphor for work and struggles with day to day pressures. He is quirky and unusual possibly comparative to Kate Nash but only because of the lyrical similarities (i.e.- the humour aspects) and his odd need for more appeal. The single is rather short, but sweet; B-side 'Myrtle Parade' is entertaining and in Waltz-like fashion, McGuiness reveals his rather kinky side- "I swear officer, I found her tied to my bed."
His Irish/ Liverpudlian/ London upbringing could be to blame for his slightly eccentric, ironic lyrical genius, but who's complaining? Playing local and mainstream festivals throughout the year- including the diverse Glastonbury, Eugene McGuiness could quite possibly be the talk of the summer. Watch this space.
