Promising Stuff

I remember seeing Nephwrack at Bloodstock Open Air festival in 2006. I also remember being fairly impressed by the Hampshire based quartet, so it was with great interest I put this single taster track 'By The Light' into my stereo and pressed play.

Musically it's not what I remember from their Bloodstock show and if I'm being honest I was disappointed by this song's opening riffage. Its lame, straightforward, unimaginative chord based riff didn't fill me with excitement, but thankfully this is the weakest part of the track as the song quickly blooms begging the question why they stuck with such a poor opening.

The chorus is catchy and the middle acoustic break down is clever, effective and contains some Iron Maiden-esque guitar work. From a personal point of view I would have loved to hear the middle of this song used as its intro before kicking into the post chorus chugging, but that's just me.

This is a solid release from an exciting British prospect. It probably won't blow you away but it'll have you remembering their name, which, when you're trying to break the music scene is half the battle. In summary, I think if you crossed Maiden with Disturbed then Nephwrack wouldn't be far away from the result.
