The Go! Team - Grip Like a Vice
'Grip Like A Vice', the first single off forthcoming album "Proof of Youth", has a lot of work to do. Let me take you back to 2004 and what the year had in store for these guys- self titled explosion of 'cheesy party rap', a mercury prize nomination for debut album 'Thunder, lightening, strike' and numerous awesome releases, leading perfectly one might assume to a well earned break.
Step forward to 2007 and the colourful Brighton lot are back- more energetic than Brazilian crazies CSS and managing to release a single that slots in perfectly with their best, rest assured this is most definitely a good thing. Eclectic to the max, 'Grip Like A Vice' provides a promising fiery start, an infectious beat- mixing rap with electro and electro with garage and garage with self raising flour and so on and so forth. Yet I'm not completely sold.
Trust me- I know this is a good record and I know that The Go! Team appear to have a knack of pulling good tunes out of the bag, but this unconventional erratic tempo falls rather heavy on my heart. I wanna know, how on earth do I dance to this stuff? How, unless I purchase some form of workout tool, do I look cool hustling and bustling with the rest of them to the team, or copycat 14-year-olds Operator Please? I struggle deeply to get down with the kids. "The World is with us, and it knows what we're talking about"- that I can't deny. Can't please them all, well not all the time I suppose.
