Don't judge a CD by its cover,
On first glance, not listening to Alphabet Backwards, you would probably pass him off as some kind of scrawny novelty act but that's where you'd be so very wrong. Alphabet Backwards is quite the opposite. This guy is bloody brilliant and as for his music...sheer genius.
The Polar Bear EP opens with 'Polar Bears', an amazingly wonderful up-tempo plea to save the Polar Bears; a great acoustic guitar riff, clever drums and one hell of a chorus. A perfectly balanced track, melodically inspirational and collectively spell astonishing.
Follow up 'Evening Standard' is a blissful track, which equals preceding track 'Polar Bears'. This guy clearly knows how to find the perfect balance between instrumentation and vocals. It's so precise and perfect. What's more, he's entirely original.
'Film On Four' is a brief interlude track; it's contrasting and shows a different but consistently great side to Alphabet Backwards. 'Stop' brings us back to the musical ecstasy that we experienced at the beginning of this album. A great track, with an unbelievable chorus, great lyrics and as usual a really fine balance between singer and musicians. 'To Make Her Laugh' is a fitting end to the EP; it's subtle but still fairly exhilarating.
This is possibly one of the best EP's you'll ever listen to from a singer/song-writer. He's a great lyricist, a great vocalist, a great musician and I still don't know his real name, but he is definitely something special.
