Hayes goes back to his Savage roots to write a credible poppy hit
Darren Hayes, previous voice of Savage Garden launches a solo career, then, fives years on he releases a track like 'On The Verge Of Something Wonderful' but the question on everyone's lips, (aside from "how does he keeps himself looking so God-Damn young"), "Is this a genuine career venture or is he just doing it for some extra cash?" The answer is simple, but we'll get to that later.
'On The Verge Of Something Wonderful' is intense and classic Darren Hayes/ Savage Garden with the slightest scent of 'Affirmation', or if you are not familiar with the Savages then I think the sound of Enrique Iglesias meets Muse, crank up the tempo, simple instrumentation, electronica and a dash of excellence, pretty much sums it up.
Darren's latest release is comfortably poppy but what it stinks of, most of all, is Modern-Day Eurovision; about a dozen modulations, quirky/cheesy instrumentation and a bizarrely catchy chorus. If only Australia were a member of the E.U.
As for if this career trek from Darren is genuine or not, well, of course it bloody is. You hardly expect someone of his talent to take on a bold escapade if he wasn't fully committed to it. He's clearly trying to be pioneering and different, to fill a huge void in the modern music scene. Pop-culture needs someone like him, someone who's daring to be unique in a modern scene where a lot of the music is indistinguishable.
In the midst of a band reformation and regeneration era, we have just one question for Mr. Hayes, (aside from "How does he keep himself looking so God-Damn Young"), will there be any such return for Savage Garden?
