The hits just keep on comin'...
Meg and Mog - sorry - Jack, release a typically robust track from their newish album 'Icky Thump'.
The trademark cymbal-heavy drums, Seventies riffage and gloriously stupid descant guitar wailing are all present and correct and Mr White's voice is as nasal and captivating as ever. The addition of a Hammond Organ is also a hoot and the whole thing sounds like an album track Neil Young left off 'Tonight's The Night' because it was too damn heavy and a little bit too silly. But don't take that the wrong way: the lyric is a truly affecting one; one that would leave only the most barren-hearted and bitter muso cold.
Long-time fans of The White Stripes will surely ignore 'You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You're Told)' as a single as I'll bet they've had the album on their racks (or under their pillows) since release day. The precious few yet to be converted won't find much here to convince them to embrace the ways of the Stripes, but then if everyone liked everything, life really wouldn't be much fun would it?
