An Impressive Debut
Sparkling melodies, quick-witted lyrics that get straight to the point with their beautiful portrayals and rippling rhythms, Voxtrot's eponymous debut is filled with vibrant emotion: it's a vivid collection of tunes dedicated to exploring the finer moments of everyday life and the feelings that blossom from them.
There are smooth and elegant odes with the kind of indie cool that could see them as radio anthems as lyrical couplets trip off the singer Ramesh's tongue, 'Steven' for example features bright brass and chirpy piano chords. The highlight, and track which really proves Voxtrot's lyrical worth is opener, 'Introduction' a shimmering tune with the flowing wistful phrases like, "Your sun sets when my sun starts to shine" and sets the tone for the rest of the album.
Single, 'Firecracker' is a passionate and brash mix of agile basslines, sharp vocals and punchy percussion with a vicious and gloriously catchy chorus, while 'Brother In Conflict' has an equally bold rumbling rhythm that could easily get a crowd moving. It's this mix of looming guitar riffs and eloquent vocals that's the most charming and bound to instantly get you on side, electricity sizzles in the air during each caustic number.
The more relaxed tones of 'The Future Part 1' are a pleasant change with blissful instrumental work bathing you in its light-hearted tone. In contrast the lovely, 'Real Live Version' is a charming ballad with searing strings and swelling piano backing the weary and dewy-eyed lilt of Ramesh.
'Voxtrot' is a frothy blast of tunes that will fill you with excitement and curiosity, a definite asset to any record collection.
