Tremendous power pop.
Perhaps it's just because we've bounced onto this song after listening to Ray Lamontagne but Paul Steel and 'Your Loss' has invigorated the listening process like a cold shower and a can of Red Bull after a long night drinking. That's doing Mr. Steel a great dis-service though, having witnessed the energetic young man live before, it's obvious he has an infectious and upbeat way about him that would shine through no matter what artist he was following. If you can imagine the manic-ness (and at times, looks) of Russell Brand meeting the musical ambition of Brian Wilson, then you're getting close to the enigma that is Paul Steel.
With an almost Britpop-era introduction (jangly guitar, keyboard and weird backing music) there may be a slight wonder at what's going on but by the time Pauls vocals grab the listener before running downhill at full speed in a terrifying, yet amazingly exciting, burst, the tracks made to be listened to over and over. It's got backing vocals that are too high to properly make out what's being said, it's got lyrics about not being in love with someone that's being delivered in a glorious manner and it's got some crazy effects that sound a child laughing at the end. Honestly, what's not to like about 'Your Loss'?
The brief slow-down section near the end is clearly there to allow a brief pause before the song takes a final run at the sun but it does so with such a cheeky grin on its chops, you don't mind at all.
