Brilliantly Disturbing
Whilst on the surface Turin Brakes' latest offering may sound like a run of the mill love song, all cheery beats and sweetness and light, it soon becomes clear that there's something dark lurking beneath the folk-pop duos song. Like The Police's 'Every Breathe You Take' before it Turin Brakes 'Stalker' has masked its sinister and disturbing subject beneath a flood of inoffensive guitar riffs and mellow beats that weave mystically into a chorus that at first glance sounds like a guy professing his love, not the weirdo lurking in the bushes with his night vision binoculars confessing about how he's "with you all the time" and how he'll "destroy all of the friends you make". Sure, it's unsettling and somewhat sick but intriguingly Turin Brakes have put a spin on 'Stalker' as to make it weirdly appealing regardless of the subject matter.
Brilliantly disturbing with an inventive twist to the traditional love song, 'Stalker' perfectly disguises its alarming subject amid soothing vocals and calming instrumentals, confusingly putting you at ease before revealing its true intentions. A love song for those who linger in the shadows desperate for a sneaky peak of their object of obsession.
